How to Pick the Perfect Niche for Your Blogging Business
Share this post...

This is a question that I get asked a lot in the comment section. How to pick the perfect niche for a blogging business? Without wasting much of your time, this blog is all about choosing a great niche for your own blog.

When it comes to blogging, your niche is going to be the one guiding you on what to write. Having the correct niche means you will always love what you choose to write or promote. But don’t get it wrong, you still need to consider the visitors after all they are the ones who are going to consume your content.

There are two critical issues when it comes to beginners choosing a niche. Either the niche is too attached/specific to them that no one else actually cares about it or a niche that they are not passionate about. But first…

What is a niche?

A niche is a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service. For example; “he believes he has found a niche in the market” (definition from Google search results page)To better understand the definition of niche, we need to look into the meaning of a niche market (the term used).

What is a Niche market?

A niche market is when you target a specific group of people rather than everyone. For example, if you sell running shoes, instead of marketing them to everyone who likes running, you would focus on people who are overweight and want to lose weight by exercising more regularly. This way, you can ensure that your product appeals to this audience and will be useful to them!

For example; let us choose a broad topic/niche on “How to Start a Blog.” This niche can be refined to even different niches like SEO, WordPress, Start a blog, Plugins, Themes, etc. You can choose one of these niches as your main niche and then further break it down into sub-niches. If we choose SEO, we can target sub-niches like; Image SEO, On-page SEO, Off-page SEO, etc.

Please NOTE that even these sub-niches can be considered broad if you want to write or target only “for example” Off-page SEO where you can further refine it to Backlinks, guest posting, off-page SEO Tips, and Tricks, etc.

Nearly every market can be further refined, or divided, by the specific needs and preferences of its constituents.

5 tips on how you can choose a niche for your blog

1. Pick a Niche that you are passionate about

Passion and Work? Yes, in the modern world you can earn money doing what you love. When choosing a blog niche, you need to consider choosing a topic that you are passionate about. This means that you can come up with ideas on what to write within no time as opposed to just relying on research.

Please note that I don’t mean you don’t have to do keyword research, it is very crucial as a blogger and helps you find keywords that are easy to rank and with good search volume. Of course, it is hard to do the latter without keyword research.

2. Pick a niche that has a market/audience

First, let’s define a market or audience. A market/audience is a set of people whom your business and/or brand engages with, either directly or indirectly.

Choosing a niche that has a market and audience means you can; get organic traffic to your blog, easily convert sales, rank easily, etc. That is the main benefit of having a market which we will expand on point 5 below.

3. Researching your niche

There are many ways to research your niche. The best way is to use keyword research tools that help you determine whether a certain keyword is competitive, how easy it is to rank for that keyword, the market or search volume, the monetization range for ads, etc.

low keyword seo

When choosing a keyword for your niche as a beginner, the competition should be between 0 k.d -15 k.d (k.d – keyword difficulty to rank), search volume should be at least 1000+ per month, while other factors might not that be important at first.

There are a lot of free keyword research tools that you can use if your budget is tight by following the link provided below.

4. Avoid Competetive Niche

The more competitive your niche is, the harder it will be for you to rank. When choosing a niche, you want to make sure that despite being something you love it should not be over-saturated. For example, let’s say your niche is “SEO” which is very competitive.

To rank for this keyword, you will need a lot of backlinks to boost the ranking because there is a lot of information on Google. To prove your content is good to Google, you will need others to tell Google through backlinks. This can be tiring.

For beginners, ranking your website from when you raunch it is what you want. This can be achieved by choosing a niche that is less competitive. You can apply the steps said earlier i.e refining your niche into a much less competitive sub-niche. This way you can easily rank, but still, an effort like on-page SEO, permalinks, internal linking, and image optimization needs to be considered.

5. Easy to Monetize

A great niche should be monetizable. To check whether your niche is easy to monetize, you can check on your competitors’ monetization methods. Some of these include; ads display, courses, saas products, affiliate monetization, etc. We have a blog on blog monetization that you can check on the links provided below.

Conclusion

As I conclude, if you can find your niche meeting most of these criteria then you are good to go. Otherwise, you might need to do some more research about it. Another thing that can help you determine whether you are passionate about your niche is “you should be able to generate or come up with at least 10 blog ideas without much struggle. I that is the case, then you are good to go.

In the end, there is no bad or good niche. All that matters is how focused you are and the amount of effort you are going to put into your niche. For example, if you consistently write content about that niche, you build authority and tell Google that you are good about it. This can help Google push your content to more visitors gaining you organic clicks. This means more revenue if you are showing ads or even selling products.
